Well, today was my first day, and boy was it hard. They put me in the cattery, which luckily isn't as loud as the kennels, but it's harder work, and if you aren't cautious or fast the scared cats will hit you. For at least 2 hours I was cleaning cages, and then hand washing the dirty litter pans and bowls. Unfortunately in the middle of it they had to start euthanizing some cats. Seeing them get injected wasn't too bad, but what was really disturbing was the cart for the bodies. There had to have been at least a dozen in the cart. Unfortunately, there's just nothing you can do, especially for the feral ones which by law have to be euthanized after their 5 day wait period.
I ended up in the kennel laundry room for the last 45 minutes I was there, and that was boring and smelly. 3/4 of their washers were broken so I had to sit and stare at one washer for 15 minutes until I could put another load in. Finally, I decided to leave after putting in 3 hours since I was also having a little anxiety around the kennel techs.
I stopped to check on Darwin, and boy does he look ten times better! At first he wasn't in his kennel, and I got nervous, but 30 minutes later when I was going to leave he was in there and actually wagging and walking around instead of laying all curled up in fear. I figured they were finally able to take him out and walk him now that he has been adopted(dogs under the 5 day wait period can't be taken out in case their owners show up looking for them).
They are great!
She looks like araneus diadematus, which is an orb weaver common on the east coast. It's harmless unless you are allergic, and for the most part extremely passive. If she becomes a problem you can simply shoo her into a cup and dump her into a bush without any worries. If she has babies though, I would suggest waiting until most of the babies have flown off before poking in the web.
